South Africa, many of it's citizen's love this beautiful country and all it's pastimes, yet when it comes to the web it seems that no one cares about the state of it.
When it comes to web standards, we are regularly shocked by the total disregard by local web design companies. To us web design is about designing and developing the best possible solution for the clients needs.
This goes further than designing a beautiful interface (which generally is the only aspect the client cares about), it is about organising information, crafting to suit target markets, a perfect balance of form and function, and that is not what we see today.
Profit? Laziness? Incorrect career choice? Who really knows. All we know is what we have seen and analysed.
We will take one of our favorite examples to illustrate a point. While researching on the web we came across a local shopping mall just up the road from us. It has been in operation for several years, is constantly expanding and is forever bustling with customers. The site had a nice design, and seemed to be implemented well, until you looked under the surface and all the cracks started to show. We wont go into the gory details but we will say the site had 125 errors and 24 warnings on XHTML 1.0 transitional. Does the client know about that?
Grant me profits only, grant me the joy of profit made,
and see to it that I enjoy cheating the buyer. - Publius Ovidius Naso
The above mentioned web site was developed by a web design agency here in South Africa, and guess what, not only is there site attractive but it is built correctly, intuitively and it validates to both XHTML 1.0 Transitional and CSS 3.
Why would a company who is fully capable of constructing a great website, make the Mall's website in such a slap-dash manner?
We are passionate about what we do, and we constantly strive to correct our mistakes, even if there are thousands of clients and web agencies out there who don't care.. we do.
If you offer a great product, business will come, and we wont stop until our product is perfect.
Here's to a future of fantastic web design in South Africa!
